Essay Basicsとは？ 

カナダからカナダのカリキュラムに基づいてデザインした40レベルのエッセイWriting基本特訓。

レベルはカナダのGrade4~10程度、カナダ留学で成果を期待する人には絶対必要なスキルです。

指導は日本の生徒に大人気の数学専門家Robert McMillan

え？なぜ数学專門家がWritingをって？ 

英語は非常に論理的・数学的な言語です。

日本語とは全く逆に位置する、論理的・科学的・具体的・批判的な言葉ですので、数学のまっすぐな論理を使うと「な〜んだ英語ってこういうことかぁ！」と驚くはず。

40レベルすべてのサンプルはRobertのオリジナル。

生徒たちはそのサンプルの見事なリードでぐいぐい力をつけています。

ここでは２つのレベルをご紹介します。 

Unit1〜Unit9は［自分のアイディアを論理的な３つの理由とそれをサポートする具体例で書くエッセイ］

Expository Essay

すべてのエッセイはこの基本から始まります。

例えば、下記のようなサンプルプランから自分のトピックを選びます。

Unit 4　（大体カナダのGrade６レベル）

Please read the following plan and essay:

I can’t play basketball. ［トピックセンテンス］ 

1. I’m too short　［理由1］

* five feet eight inches tall (170 cm.) 　［具体例］

* friends are six feet (180 cm.)

* never touch the ball

2. I can’t jump　［理由2］

* short legs　［具体例］

* no power

3. I forget the rules　［理由3］

* don’t dribble　［具体例］

* body check

* kick the ball

* エッセイの真髄はプランです。プランが論理的一貫性を持つことが絶対必要。　生徒たちは、ここでRobertから論理的一貫性とはどういうことかを学び、プランを完成させて行きます。

* プランにOKが出るといよいよエッセイを書き始めます。英語のエッセイルールは結構うるさいですので、下記のサンプルエッセイを参考に自分のエッセイを書いて行きます。 

More than 450 million people in the world play basketball, but I can’t. First, I’m too short. I am only five feet eight inches tall, about 170 centimeters, whereas* my friends are all nearly six feet or 180 centimeters tall. When I play with them, I can never touch the ball. They just pass it over my head. That’s no fun. In addition, I can’t jump. I have short legs, and they don’t have any power to jump up. Some of my friends can jump high and dunk a basketball, but I can’t even touch the net. Most importantly, I always forget the rules. I just run without dribbling* the ball, for example, or body check people like I do in ice hockey. Once I kicked a basketball by mistake and made the basketball coach very angry. As soon as I become six feet tall and remember the rules, I may become a good basketball player; but for now I can’t play that game.

Unit 39 （カナダのGrade10レベル）

This unit is an independent study – you will need to find a problem and think of a solution. In particular, you will find a controversial topic and then write a persuasive essay plan and essay for it.

Assignment 

1. Try to find a controversial topic in your home country. For ideas, you can check the news or tap (use) your own memory. Once you have found a topic, write a topic sentence for your persuasive essay. Please DO NOT write the plan yet.  

2. Write a persuasive essay plan using your topic sentence. You will need two positive reasons and one counterattack reason (to "attack" the other side).

このあたりのレベルになると、英語で考え、英語で自分の考えをそのまま表現する能力に近くなります。

40レベルすべて終了した生徒は、カナダでの大学留学への確実な一歩を踏み出したことになります。
