How to Deal with Poetry in Canadian English Classes  (by Robert McMillan)

If you intend to graduate from high school in Canada, you need to study poetry. It is one of four major areas of study in English classes here (along with essays, descriptive writing and narratives, which our Essay Basics course prepares you for). You must read, analyze and even write poems. And most final exams include a poetry section where students read and analyze poems. This column shows Japanese students how to cope with poetry at schools in Canada. 

カナダの高校を卒業したいと思っていますか？　じゃ、Poetryの勉強が必須です。カナダでのEnglish授業には４つの重要な領域がありPoetryはそのひとつです。後の３つはEssays, Descriptive writing, Narrativesで、カナダクラブのEssay Basicsで指導している内容です。Poemに取り組むには「読み」「分析し」「詩を自分でも書く」ことが必修です。そして、最終試験にはPoetryのセクションがほぼ必ずでてきます。このコラムでは、日本人留学生がカナダの高校でのPoetryにどう対処したらいいのかを示していきます。

In short, poetry is mandatory at schools in Canada, especially if you are aiming for university. It is difficult but doesn’t have to be if approached systematically. We teach poetry in the UX English 10 course course, which is free for all Canada Club students after finishing the first 40 assignments of Essay Basics. Japanese students can learn to analyze and write creative poems based on their own simple feelings, and that is a beautiful thing to see. 

つまり、詩はカナダの学校では必修であるということ。特に大学進学を目指している場合には詩を理解出来ることが必須です。難しそうですか？　いえいえ、Systematicなアプローチを訓練すれば大丈夫。UX EnglishのEN10でそんな訓練をしています。カナダクラブの生徒はEssay Basicsの40レベルすべてを終了すればご褒美として無料で受講可能です。EN10コースで、日本の生徒は詩を分析し、自分自身の簡単な感情をもとにして詩を書くことが出来るよう学びます。出来上がった詩は”Beautiful"そのものです。
