カナダからオンラインでEssay Writing を教えています。

Special Writing と名付けたこのコースは、日本で直接中・高校生を指導していた時に、パートナーのRobert McMillan が作ったものです。

１〜40のレベルを階段を上がるように組み立ててあります。

英語は「具体的実例」の言語。

日本語は「曖昧抽象的」の言語。

その日本語から英語への頭の切り替えを40ステップで行うシステムです。

Robert がティーチングチームに加わり28年。

た〜くさんの生徒を英語のライティング達人へと導いて来ました。

小学生から教え高校卒業後カナダの大学に進学。

大学院まで進んだ生徒は、まずカナダの大学準備ESLコースに入った時、インストラクターにこう言われました。

「こんなライティングどこで習ったの？日本から来たんだよね。これはすごい。上のレベルに上がりなさい。」

同じくカナダに大学進学した生徒。

「英語での引用の仕方をこんなに正確に知っている日本人生徒は初めて！どこで習ったの？」

日本の大学に進学した生徒。

余りにもライティングレベルが他の日本人と違うので、帰国子女のクラスに。

カナダの高校を卒業した生徒。

Robert 先生に教えてもらったライティングがなかったら絶対授業についていけてません！

日本の大学で英語を専攻した生徒。

大学でのライティングコースのレベルが低すぎて仰天。

地元の高校の英語の授業。

英語の先生たちのライティングレベルよりはるかに上なので、先生たちお手上げ。

添削出来る人がいませんでした。

40レベルすべてに用意した見本のライティングは、すべてRobertのオリジナル。

経験や世界の話題から生徒が面白がる内容をいっぱい使っています。

そんなRobert も現在はカナダに帰国。

もともとの専門の数学・コンピューターサイエンスに復帰準備で大忙しの中、日本の生徒たちのエッセイライティングは面倒みていきたいと大奮闘。

大きな時差のため、日本時間夜のレッスンにはカナダの早朝起き出して

“Hi!” と頑張ってくれています。

日本の大切な生徒のために。

つい最近Robert が絶賛していたエッセイをご紹介します。

40レベルのうちの11番目のレベルのエッセイです。

創造性に溢れるエッセイが踊りだしそうな傑作です。

Robert のお手本はこんなタイトル：

I) Please read the following plan and essay:

Topic Sentence: China should not allow people to lengthen their legs

（タイム誌の記事にあった「中国女性は仕事を得るために背を高くしたい。その方法は足の骨を切っては伸ばす方法」ともとにしています。）

トピックセンテンスの書き方、プランの作り方、３つの理由の書き方、具体的な実例の提示法など、実に詳細なレッスンを受けます。

その後生徒は自分のプラン作り。

３つの理由と具体例でRobertを満足させてやっと、実際のライティング。

こんなエッセイを書きました。

Robert のコメントもそのまま残してありますので、指導の様子が垣間見えると思います。

People should not be allowed to use guns.

In some countries people can use guns without taking a special exam. Guns can kill a lot of people in one time. In the US more than 10,000 people are killed in gun murders in a year. People should not be  allowed to use guns. (OK!) 

First guns are too powerful to be used by people. Sometimes a gun stops accidents, but when we use a gun, someone may get severe (nice!) damage. If a bullet hits  legs , the legs may need rehabilitating. Most civilians can’t use a gun well , so when they shoot a gun, they may destroy something not a target. For example, if they shoot at a UFO in a hurry, the bullets may hit an airplane or an air balloon(ha ha!).Guns may cause big spin-off accidents. If bullets hit windows of a high building, pieces of glass may happen to cut someone. The big sound makes someone surprised. The surprised guy may fall down on the road and be crushed by a car. (Ha ha! Poor guy!) OK!

Second, guns have a bad mental affect on people. Some people may think they will become stronger than before when they hold a gun. The feeling may make some people nuts. (interesting idea!) Some of them may turn to crime (right!). Then nervous guys may lose ordinary lives. They can’t walk on the street without wearing heavy shields and checking behind them every five seconds. Guns affect people’s lives in bad ways.

Finally, people can stop accidents without guns. If we want to catch animals such as deer, we can use a trap. If we want to break something massive, we have another tool such as a hammer, and the holy bible (Ha ha!). If we have trouble between others, we can talk and understand each other.  We are smarter than other species, but we have sensitive emotions. The emotions sometimes can’t be controlled, and guns may have a bad  effect on our decisions. We don’t need guns in our daily lives.
