University students in Canada are demanding more and more plant-based foods, and universities are responding with more vegan and vegetarian options. That is not surprising. Students make it to university in Canada by engaging with ideas in high school, and these smart students worry about the environmental effects of greenhouse gas emissions from animal-based food production. They also question the ethics of killing an animal for meat when they can get plant-based protein. If you come to study in Canada and are asked your opinion on subjects like this but have never thought about them, your peers will consider you a shallow thinker. We begin training our Canada Club students how to form their own opinions from Essay Basics.

カナダの大学生たちが、plant-based foods（動物からではなく植物を原料にした食品）をもっと普及させるよう要求しています。それに応え大学は、菜食主義者用のオプションをどんどん増やしています。大学生がこのような動きの先頭に立つことは普通のことです。カナダの大学で学ぶだけの能力がある学生は、高校ではアイディアを構成する練習に終始し、そこでまず環境問題を憂慮始めます。動物原料の食品生産から起こる温室効果ガスが引き起こす環境悪化などについて真剣に考え始めます。また、学生たちは、食植物原料食品が可能であるにも関わらず、肉のために動物を殺すことに倫理的問題を感じています。

カナダに留学するとこのような質問についての意見を求められますよ、多分今まで日本では考える機会もなかったような質問について。何も意見もアイディアも持っていないとわかると、カナダの同級生たちはあなたのことを「考えが浅い人」と判断してしまいます。

Is it ethical to eat meat when livestock production emits greenhouse gasses that are warming the planet? Is it okay to use disposable plastic when plastic particles adversely affect us and the environment? Should I wash my jeans each time I wear them when washing jeans releases microfibers that pollute the Arctic Ocean? Ignoring such questions is not an option at schools in Canada. Intelligent students here think about these issues, and their decisions help shape their behaviour. They think about what kind of person they want to become and try to become it.

畜産業が温室効果ガスを出す犯人となり、それによりこの地球がどんどん暖められている今、肉を食べることは倫理にかないますか？　プラスチック粒子が私達の身体や環境に悪影響を与えている今、使い捨てプラスチックを使うことをよしとしますか？　ジーンズを洗うたびに出るマイクロファイバーが北極海を汚染しているとわかった今、一度だけ履いたジーンズを洗濯しますか？　そのような質問に知らないふりをすることはカナダの学校では不可能なことです。頭のいい学生はこれらの問題について考え、悪い結果をもたらす行動を変えるための判断、決断をします。　将来どんな人間になりたいかを考え、そして自分が正しいと思える人になろうと努力しています。

That starts early. Last summer, I heard a fascinating conversation between a mother and her ten-year-old daughter in the cafeteria of the Royal Tyrrell Museum of Paleontology. The mother asked how her daughter’s pizza was, and the girl replied, “Probably good, I haven’t tried it yet.” Then I saw the girl pick at the thinly-sliced sausage on top and say, “Mom, dad probably wouldn’t let me be vegan even if I wanted to.” I also heard from a high school principal in BC that one of his smartest students confronted him for eating foie gras. The student argued that the force feeding of ducks and geese to expand their livers was an inhumane treatment of animals. These two kids had already been thinking about the ethics of meat consumption.

こんな訓練はカナダでは幼い時から始まっています。昨年の夏、母親と10歳くらいの娘との素敵な会話を耳にしました。恐竜学で有名なアルバータ州にあるRoyal Tyrrell Museumのカフェテリアでのことです。母親が娘に買ったピザはおいしいかどうかと聞きました。娘はこう答えました「多分おいしいな。まだ食べてないけど。」　そしてその子はピザに乗っていた薄切りのソーセージをつまみこう言いました「Mom,もし私が菜食主義になりたいと行ってもDadは多分認めてくれないよね。」　またBC州の高校校長からこんな話も聞きました。学校でもかなり優秀な生徒がフォアグラを食べることについて議論をしてきたそうです。生徒は、あひるや雁に強制的に食べ物を押し込み肝臓を無理に肥大させることは、動物を人道的に扱っていないことだと主張して来ました。このようにカナダの子供たちは肉の消費についてすでに考え始めているんです。

It is difficult for Japanese students to deal with such ideas when their education system does not ask them to form opinions. Here at Canada Club, we help them do so through essay writing. To write an essay in English, you need clear reasons to support your main idea. If you argue it is okay to eat meat, you need three good reasons why. Canadian students learn this in junior high; Canada Club students start writing opinion essays from Essay Basics assignment #10.

そのような考えに対処することは、日本人生徒には難しいことです。日本の教育制度は意見を組み立てる能力は要求していませんから。私の教えるカナダクラブでは、自分の意見の組み立て方を英語でエッセイを書くことを通じ日本の生徒を訓練しています。英語のエッセイでは、自分の主張する考えを明確な理由で説明することが必要です。もし肉を食べてもいいと主張したいなら、３つの明確で論理的な理由が必要。カナダの生徒たちはこれを中学で学びます：カナダクラブの生徒たちはEssay Basicsプログラムのレベル10からこのようなopinion essayを書き始めます。

In high school, however, you need more. You also need to argue against the opposing opinion. If you say it is ethical to eat meat, for example, then you need to argue how to ethically slaughter animals and manage greenhouse gasses. If you argue that it is not ethical to eat meat, you need to discuss how to get necessary protein and how to help food producers that will lose jobs. This writing style is called a persuasive essay, and it involves creative problem solving. Canada Club students begin to write persuasive essays from assignment #36.

そして、カナダの高校では更に難解な訓練が待っています。また、異なる意見に対して反論することも必要になります。例えば、もし肉を食べることには倫理的問題はないと主張するなら、どうやったら倫理的に動物を屠殺し、温室効果ガスをどう抑えるのかを述べる必要があります。もし、倫理的でないと主張するなら、どうやって必要なタンパク質を得るのか、仕事を失う食肉業者の面倒を見るのかについて説明する必要があります。このようなwritingスタイルはpersuasive essay と呼ばれ、問題解決には相当のcreativityが要求されます。カナダクラブの生徒は、このようなpersuasive essayをレベル36からのEssay Basicsで訓練しています。

In short, if you are coming to study at university in Canada, smart people will ask your opinion on a range of topics, and your intelligence will be evaluated by your reply.
