本日７月４日は、アメリカでは"Independence Day"、つまり「独立記念日」です。
別名、"the Forth of July"とも呼ばれています。

世界各国の祝日から日食＆月食の予定日まで、面白い情報が確認できるサイトです。
では、サイトの一部を抜粋してご紹介しますが、上記①、②の答えを探してみましょう！
①について：
◆Independence Day is annually celebrated on July 4 and is often *known as "the Fourth of July". It is the *anniversary of the *publication of the *declaration of *independence from Great Britain in 1776.
*known as ~:「～として知られている」
*anniversary:「記念日」
*publication:「公表：発表」
*declaration:「宣言」
*independence:「独立」
②について：
◆Very *few people have to work on Independence Day.
*few: "a few"は「２～３の」ですが、"few"は「ほとんどない」の意味。
◆It is a day of family celebrations with picnics and barbecues, showing *a great deal of *emphasis on the American tradition of *political freedom.
*a great deal of ~:「たくさんの～」
*emphasis:「強調」
*political freedom:「政治的自由」
◆Activities *associated with the day include watermelon or hotdog eating *competitions and sporting events, such as baseball games, *three-legged races, swimming activities and *tug-of-war games.
*associated with:「～と関連した」
*competitions:「競争；競技（会）」
*three-legged race:「二人三脚」 直訳すると三本足レース。面白い表現ですね！
*tug-of-war:「綱引き」 "tug"は「引っ張る」の意味。
◆Many people *display the American flag outside their homes or buildings. Many communities arrange *fireworks that are often *accompanied by *patriotic music.
*display:「展示する；みせびらかす；飾る」
*fireworks:「花火」
*accompanied by ~:「～付き添う；伴わせる」
*patriotic:「愛国的な；愛国心の強い」
Independence Dayにアメリカで行われる数々のイベントですが、映画でもよく見ることのできるシーンばかりです。
日本では、花火(fireworks)の季節にはまだ少し早いですが、アメリカでは花火の打ち上げがメインイベントだと言っても過言ではないくらい、この日には至る所で花火大会が行われます。
さ～て、今晩はhotdogでも食べながら、花火の代わりに満月でも眺めるとするか。。。
